description: <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;font-size:12pt"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>Updated in 2022 to include additional lower 48 conterminous US states and remove Alaska from the national compilation. Downloadable version of this data is available at https://gbp-blm-egis.hub.arcgis.com/datasets/blm-natl-pfyc-potential-fossil-yield-classification-geologic-formation-2022-polygons/about. Geologic formations coverage layer: This Layer contains values for the Potential Fossil Yield Classification (PFYC) for ranking the potential of a geologic unit to produce scientifically significant fossils. The features will begin to display at map scale 1:577,793 or as the user continues to zoom in. Please use the BLM_Natl_PFYC_GeologicFormation_Cache map service to view features at scales further zoomed out from 1:577,793. This Layer contains polygon boundaries between mappable geologic units and polygon codes for the mappable geologic units. It also contains fields for geologic ages and sort codes for sorting the units by time. Additional fields were added to the source data including earliest geologic age, latest geologic age, PFYC justification, PFYC rank (1-5), and a coded representation for the standardized BLM coloring scheme for PFYC maps. Geologic Map Index Layer: This layer outlines the source maps compiled to make the Geologic Formations layer. It is visible at all scales. It is a visual index that contains sources of map information. The PFYC model is used to evaluate potential impacts to fossils in ground-disturbing actions, or to help inform research. The data consists of three components, two geospatial datasets and a written report with details on classification justifications.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
